About The Island

In the middle of San Francisco Bay sits Angel Island State Park, offering spectacular views of the San Francisco skyline, the Marin Headlands and Mount Tamalpais.

The island is also alive with history. Three thousand years ago the island was a fishing and hunting site for Coastal Miwok Indians. It was later a haven for Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala, a cattle ranch, and a U.S. Army post.

From 1910 to 1940, the island processed hundreds of thousands of immigrants, the majority from China.  During World War II, Japanese, and German POWs were held on the island, which was also used as a jumping-off point for American soldiers returning from the Pacific. In the '50s and '60s, the island was home to a Nike missile base.

Today, there is one automated active Coast Guard station - at Point Blunt - on the island (this area is off limits). Angel Island became a State Park in 1954.

On Her Wedding Day............

We are in Oxnard, CA today...waking up to overcast skies........but lovely roses and oleander........and a proximity to the ocean that I have not experienced in years.  I am happy and content.  Making slow progress this morning after being slightly sore from being in a car for the last 48 hours, but getting prepared to pack the car, check out of the hotel, search for Starbucks......and, meander up Highway 1, adjacent to the vast Pacific.

I scanned the news highlights on Google news......and, read about the L.A. wildfires in Palmdale, which is not far from where we are.  I figured that is why the skies yesterday evening were so smoggy/hazy/smoky looking.  After reading about the wildfires, I read a most surprising column by a legal analyst, Andrew Cohen............and, it left me speechless.  To have someone of your past.........a past love.......write about you in such a positive and loving way is such a beautiful thing.........something seemingly non-existent in today's society.  It took my breath away.......

In New Mexico, on the road to Arizona and then Cali...

Pretty drive yesterday from Dallas....up through Wichita Falls, and Amarillo....on into New Mexico.  We saw lots of beautiful wind turbine farms..huge ones.  And lots of black eyed susan flowers and sunflowers.  Once we got into New Mexico, the scenery changed dramatically.  Lots of mesas...very dry....and virtually nothing on the road that suggested humans lived anywhere nearby for miles and miles.  We stopped at an old Historic Route 66 gas station to top off the tank.  I had the BEST fast food cheeseburger ever in Amarillo.  Apparently, the McDonalds in the panhandle of TX use Angus beef, so I got an 'Angus Burger' with cheese...and I swear, it was the BEST BEST cheeseburger I have had in my life from a fast food restaurant.  Especially McDonalds!  Saw some beautiful lightening storms after passing through the foothills of the Rockies.  We are right next to the Continental Divide.  Got to our destination, Gallup, NM, around 10pm last night, and it was nice and cool outside...in the 60s, so I got out my fleece jacket.  Turned on the weather channel and saw that Dallas was 103...Hahaha!  So glad to be out of that heat!!!  Going to find a starbucks now....and we will be on the road again shortly.  Staying on I-40 for another 600 miles roughly, and then entering Cali.  Staying tonight in Oxnard, CA...just south of L.A.  Taking coast road highway 1 up the coast from Oxnard to San Fran tomorrow.  Can't wait!!  'til next time....

Karma/Kismet/Serendipity

This past week, I gave two weeks notice to resign from my current position.  I have worked at this job for the last 6 months.  Let's just say that my employer was 'less than pleased', and leave it at that.  At the end of the day, I was just asked to leave Friday, and they would pay me for the next week and 1/2.  While I felt bad leaving all of my sweet/hardworking teammates with extra work (plus the added pain of training someone new), I realized that this was actually a gift.........I now have time to plan my move across the USA, and PACK....and, actually get some much needed sleep!  I also realized that I shouldn't take the wrath of my ex-employer personally.  He would have been bent-out-of-shape had anyone resigned...because my leaving did not fit with his 'master plan'.  At the end of the day, I realized that I have definitely made the right decision for ME....because not only is the opportunity in California far superior........but also because I just don't like being treated poorly when I do something that doesn't fit with someone else's agenda.  We are all unique, and we all have a unique path.  

In other news.........I have sold about $1100.00 worth of 'STUFF' on Craigslist and as a reseller on Amazon.  It has been fun getting rid of things I don't need anymore, and passing them off or sending them to people who can benefit in some way.  I hope everyone that receives one of my 'hand-me-downs' (books, old cameras, bike, etc.) will enjoy them as much (or more) than I did! I wish I had done this ages ago!  I would like to continue doing this act of getting rid of 'stuff' throughout life........and, perhaps donating a portion of the proceeds to a worthy charitable cause.  PAY IT FORWARD!  

I'm off to Starbucks to get my favorite drink.......Venti Cinnamon Dolce Latte, and then to go pick up some packing boxes.  I will write more soon...............
